This book entitled Numerical Methods with Applications is written primarily for engineering and science undergraduates taking a course in Numerical Methods. The textbook offers a unique treatise to numerical methods which is based on a holistic approach and short chapters. This book is a product of many years of work on educational projects funded since 2002 by the National Science Foundation. Since our belief continues to embrace open and uncomplicated dissemination, individual chapters of the book in pdf form are always available free of charge.

W. Layton and M. Sussman, Numerical LinearAlgebra. This book is available as a free pdf download fromLulu.com.These are excellents texts that you may be able to borrow fromanother student. The labs are conducted using Matlab, a program producedby The MathWorks. The Matlab language is, in fact, an object-orientedprogramming language with an extensive library of mathematical andscientific function calls entirely built-in. A full-featuredstudent version of Matlab with some toolboxes is available for about $100as well as a version of Matlab alone for about $50.Pitt also offers a complete student version of Matlab including toolboxesavailable for free for studentsto download and install on their personal computers.
I will grade each lab either "A+", "A", "B", "C", "D" or 0.These letter grades can be described in the following manner: "A+" means "excellent": all exercises were completed correctly.
"A" means that all exercises were attempted and are largely correct.
"B" means that all exercises were attempted but there are someserious errors.
"C" means that not all exercises were attempted or the submission isotherwise not complete.
"D" means that there is almost no correct work submitted.
0 means that the lab work was not submitted.
At the endof the course, I will use these grades to provide a laboratory grade toProf. Neilan, who will use it for approximately 30% of your overall grade. Since omittedlabs count as zero, they will seriously impact your grade, so a latesubmission is greatly preferred over skipping a lab.
If you are unable to complete a lab by its due date, youmay take additional time to complete the lab, providedyou attend each lab session until you have completed and submittedthe work. In that case, 2% will be deducted from that lab's gradefor the first week it is late (total of 3%), 3% for the second week(total of 6%), etc. If you do not attend each lab session untilyou submit your work, you will be given a grade of zero for that lab.Attending lab sessions offers the opportunity to resolve any questionsyou might have.
Some comments are presented on the finite element analysis of the time dependent effects that develop when a tunnel is driven in a rock mass characterized by a viscous behaviour. First, the so called swelling and squeezing phenomena are described considering in particular rocks containing clay minerals. Subsequently the discussion is focused on the squeezing behaviour, i.e. on the time dependent increase of the shear deformation which develops with minor volume changes. Some linear and non-linear viscous constitutive laws are discussed, as well as their use in the solution of boundary value problems. Finally, the effects taking place around tunnels driven into squeezing rocks are illustrated through some numerical analyses based on these constitutive models.
Description:This book is written for engineering undergraduates taking a course in numerical methods. The textbook offers a treatise to numerical methods which is based on a holistic approach and short chapters. An increasing number of power electronic devices and new smart-grid technologies are used to ensure a safe, reliable, and high-quality operation of the power grid. However, the effectiveness of these control devices and technologies depends largely on the accuracy of the model, the advancement of control methods, and the numerical optimization of parameters. Therefore, this special issue is focused on recent advances in modeling, numerical analysis, control, and optimization of smart grids with special emphasis on the mathematical problems encountered at any stage of power grid operation, which will be particularly significant.
Although much effort has been made on smart-grid research with a number of influential results obtained, there are still many challenging problems to be solved. Nowadays, advanced mathematical and numerical methods for the control and optimization for smart grids have become a popular research topic with the increase in complexity of the power grid.
Sample computer programs are used extensively in the book to illustrate the programming concepts. You will need Microsoft Visual Studio 2019 or higher to work with the computer programs discussed in the book. Visual Studio Community 2019 edition is available for free, though I would recommend that you get the Professional or Enterprise edition that have desirable features not available with the Community edition. 2ff7e9595c
