3DSOM Pro Image To 3D: A Simple and Fast Way to Generate Accurate and Detailed 3D Models



Microsoft has developed a product PhotoSynth that can process a large number of photos in 3D, but instead of actually creating 3D models, it constructs a virtual 3D scene based on the camera parameters and spatial correspondence between photos, enabling users to view the scene from different angles and positions, and the displayed scene image is synthesized from a given photo. Just a few days ago, on February 6, 2017, Microsoft announced the closure of the PhotoSynth service.


Reconstructing 3D objects from multiple photos taken from different angles is technically feasible, but due to some steps of the algorithm, such as detection and matching of object feature points in the image, estimation of camera parameters, etc. some errors may also happen.




3DSOM Pro Image To 3D



Using images of real specimens, the 3D models comprising approximately 20 individual bones from a canine skeleton are fully rotatable in 360 degrees from any angle and are complete with zoom functions.


Creative Dimension Software Ltd (CDSL) were asked to construct the3D models from photos using their 3DSOM Pro technology (see www.3dsom.com). The photographs weretaken onsite by the Bristol Anatomy team and then processedby CDSL to create 3D models and the final 3D presentation (complete with hotspots, links and overlays).


Comparing different conditions for the data collection revealed that an LED ring flash device was superior to a normal flash for avoiding shadows. This, in turn, reduced errors in the meshes. Completely closing the aperture of the camera helped to increase focus depth. A digital DSLR camera yielded better results in comparison to a mobile phone camera or a compact digital camera. DSLR cameras save image EXIF data (exposure time, focal ratio, focal distance, ISO, measurement mode, etc.), which can be read by various photogrammetric software and thus improves mesh calculation. Most photogrammetric software already have data about different cameras and objectives included. Many compact digital cameras do not save EXIF data with the photo file or estimate values by algorithms (e.g., iPhone).


Texture-mapping to give models a photorealistic appearance has been done mostly with 3DSOM Pro. In this procedure, 2D images of a specimen are extracted from their background and then projected onto the surface of the model, aligning them to topographic features of the model. Multiple images from different positions around the form blend to approximate the local color and texture of the original specimen. Onscreen exploration of these texture-mapped models offers a close approximation to the experience of handling the original specimens yourself.


Making a 3D model from multiple 2D images is an interesting way to create a unique and dynamic representation of an object or scene. With the right software, 3D modeling from 2D images is a surprisingly simple and rewarding process. By converting multiple 2D images into a 3D model, it is possible to create a photorealistic representation with greater detail and complexity than could be achieved with a single image.
